Hundreds of birds dropped dead on the streets of Rome on New Year’s eve after people set of fireworks at midnight to celebrate the start of the New Year.
Restrictions on Banning of Fireworks
Animal rights activist have called it a ‘massacre’ and demand that governments across the world enforce restrictions on bursting of crackers to prevent such disasters from recurring in the future.
Restrictions should be imposed upon bursting of fireworks because of several reasons- They are considered to be one of the major causes of pollution, carbon contributes to climate change, they are harmful for animals, sulphur is used excessively which is not good for humans and that fireworks are produced in factories on sweatshops where labour do not have access to basic facilities and sanitation.
This practice if ended could solve several problems across the world. It will also move us a step further in procuring human rights for labourers working in the firework and chemical industries around the world.
Why birds Died
The birds are reported to have suffered from massive heart attacks due to the loud noise of the fireworks, which lead to their death. Tests conducted do not show signs of any underlying disease or flu which could have caused their death.
Birds are known to get stressed out upon hearing loud noises. Firecrackers (about 150 Decibels) produce much louder sounds than loud music or parties (About 100 Decibels).
Since the crackers were burst around midnight, the birds were roosting at the time. These deaths did not take place in all parts of Rome. It only occurred in a certain leafy locality where there were a large number of birds. Majority of the dead birds were quite small, and included several passerines (songbirds) and swallow-like birds.
