Torrential rains and landslides in Kerala, and a cloudburst in Uttarakhand, have caused several deaths and have caused immense devastation, in addition to killing and damaging the biodiversity and pristine ecological sites in the states. The IMD (India Meteorological Department) has said that states across India, including parts of Northern India in addition to Kerala and Uttarakhand, have received 135% extra rainfall in October.

In Kerala, there have been at least 26 deaths. The flash floods have damaged a lot of property in the state. Videos of entire buildings crumbling have emerged.  There have also been landslides in some districts. A travel advisory has been issued. State CM Pinarayi Vijayan has met with PM Modi to discuss the situation on the floods.

Since the floods in 2018, the Kerala Government has rectified its mistakes and has opened the dams in the state partially for the water to flow out into the ocean. In 2018, this was not done- water collected in the dams, and was released suddenly, making the water gushing out at tremendous force wash away several settlements and forests on its banks.

In Uttarakhand, 34 are reported to have died due to flash flooding caused by a cloudburst. The flooding occurs after a series of landslides in the state in September. Flooding had also occurred in the state in February 2021, which had caused about 80 deaths. The CM of the state took an aerial survey of the flooding.

The sheer number of natural disasters in the state shows the effects of climate change and the impacts of intense logging in the state. The government had shrunk several forests in the state over the past years, and the lack of trees has led to weakening of the soil, resulting in greater destruction and more frequent landslides.
