The Chinese paddlefish (Psephurus gladius), one of the largest freshwater fish in the world, was officially declared extinct on the 3rd of January, 2020. It was dubbed the Panda of the Yangtze River, for it humongous size, and it was declared it extinct due to overfishing and habitat loss.
- There were only 211 sightings between 1981 and 2003, when the last live specimen was released into the river.
- Scientists at the Yangtze River fisheries research Institute say that the species went extinct sometime after 2005.
- The species could grow upto 22 feet in length, and the average size was 10 feet.
